Neocities.org launched on May 24, 2013 and created by Kyle Drake. The website functions are based on the 1994 website, Geocities, a site owned by Yahoo!. Geocities was shut down in the US in 2009 due to decreased traffic, but stayed open in Japan.
Neocities was launched in the name of Geocities, almost honoring the previous incarnation. The expressed goal of the site was to revive the "creativity and free expression" that Geocities originally provided. The site was made by a guy with no legal connections to the original Geocities, so he can get by with it and not get sued.
Neocities has over 101,300 websites on its server and continues to grow.
